  • Bringing a college experience to pre-college teens

For more than 30 years Dr. John Miller’s Management 101, an experiential course at Bucknell University, drew lauded reviews from scores of students who often called it “the best course of my college career” and even today refer to it as a “life-changing experience.”

Since his 2005 retirement from Bucknell John has worked to deliver a comparable experience to many more students in broader age groups. Asked in an interview about his mission to reach teens John said, “These kids are 16 or 17, and are just start to shape their strategies for success. They feel the pressure of applying to and performing in the best possible college programs. They need to demonstrate competitive performance records, build strong support networks, and prepare themselves for academic success. They need all of us to help give them a jump start.”

Summer program designed for the teen mind

David Ledgerwood’s youth leadership programs have served thousands of teens since 1996 when he first started running one-week summer programs for Rotary’s Youth Leadership Award (RYLA). For more than 15 years his approach has inspired student groups across the country to achieve more together in service.
Jay Tift, who holds dual masters degrees in Organizational Leadership and Adolescent Counseling, joined John and David in 2011, adding a critical component to the program as each activity on the schedule has been specifically maximized to fit exactly the way teens minds really think.

  • “Helped me get an internship”

“I loved my Managing Ourselves experience. I’d attend again, but I can’t because I got a summer internship [in London]. When I interviewed the recruiter loved the idea of Managing Ourselves; he asked me a lot of questions about it and I think, ultimately, it helped me get the spot. I also wrote about Managing Ourselves for one of my common app college essays. I’ll get the word out and will be more than happy to share my fantastic experience.” - Scott, 2011 MO graduate
